How to Wash Your Silk Bonnet (the Easy Way!)

How to Wash Your Silk Bonnet (the Easy Way!)

If you’ve got a silk bonnet from Niles + Chaz, you already know the magic it brings — soft strands, happy curls, and way less frizz in the morning. It’s like a little superhero cape for your hair while you sleep! But even superheroes need a little TLC to keep doing their thing. That means giving your bonnet a proper wash every now and then. Don’t worry, it’s easy-peasy. Let’s get into it!

Before You Start: A Quick Bonnet Check

Every bonnet is a little different — kind of like hair! So before you suds it up, take a peek at the care tag inside. Some bonnets (like our Bow-tiful Bonnet) are made of real silk, others have a satin lining, and some even have extra structure for the perfect fit. Knowing what yours is made of helps you wash it the right way. Also, give it a quick look. Has it been through a sweaty soccer game or a long school week? If it’s looking a little tired or has product build-up, it’s definitely time for a refresh!

Two Ways to Wash Your Bonnet

Here’s the scoop on keeping your bonnet clean and cozy — without wrecking it.

👐 Option 1: Hand Wash (The Bonnet’s Favorite)

This is the gentlest way to clean your bonnet — kind of like giving it a little spa day.

Step 1: Fill a bowl or sink with cool water. Add just a drop of gentle detergent made for silk or delicate fabrics.

Step 2: Swirl your bonnet in the water like it's dancing. Use your fingers to softly rub out any gunk — no scrubbing!

Step 3: Rinse it with cool, clean water until all the soap is gone.

Step 4: Don’t wring it! Gently press it between a towel like you’re giving it a hug, then lay it flat on a dry towel to air dry.

🌀 Option 2: Machine Wash (Only if the Label Says It’s OK!)

If your bonnet’s label says machine washable, you can go for it — but with care!

  • Pop it in a mesh laundry bag (so it doesn’t get caught).
  • Use the delicate cycle with cool water and a gentle detergent.
  • Never toss it in the dryer! Lay it flat to air dry like a little blanket.

What *Not* to Do (Bonnet No-Nos 🚫)

Even the best bonnet owners can slip up, so here are some things to avoid:

✖️ Harsh Soaps or Bleach: Silk is fancy — it likes the gentle stuff.

✖️ Twisting or Wringing: Treat your bonnet like your favorite stuffed animal — soft and sweet, never squished!

✖️ Drying in the Sun: Sunshine is great for playtime, not for bonnets. It can fade the pretty colors and weaken the fabric.
